Sport Hawke’s Bay has announced finalists for the Hawke’s Bay Secondary School Sports Awards with winners to be announced at a function at the Hawke’s Bay Racing and Events Centre on Wednesday, 16th October.
In total 43 finalists have been selected by judges representing 15 schools and spread across 26 sports. Basketball and Canoe Polo have the highest number of finalists with Napier Girls’ High School having nine athletes, volunteers and coaches recognised.
Sport Hawke’s Bay Secondary School Sports Director, Olivia McKinnon says “It has been great to see such a positive spread of athletes and volunteers recognised in this year’s awards”
“Sports of all sizes are recognised and thanks to our schools, in particular the Sport Coordinators for taking the time and putting in the effort to recognise their students and the coaches and volunteers who help them achieve at the highest level”
Through an ongoing review of the awards, this year three new awards have been included. These are Student Coach, and Male and Female All-Rounder.
The Student Coach was open to any student coach who has shown outstanding skills and service through personal commitment and development, coaching ability, rapport with students and possibly results.
Schools were also invited to nominate athletes who in their view were an outstanding all-rounder athlete. This new category recognises the achievement of students who have achieved a high standard in at least two sports, each at least as a representative of their school’s top team and regional teams.
“The judges had a difficult decision to make for all categories and it was great to see 86 high quality nominations being submitted by schools.”
“We look forward to celebrating alongside the sector in October as we announce the winners, but I hope all finalists are proud of their achievements in what has been a successful year for so many rangatahi across the Bay” McKinnon adds.
Sport Hawke’s Bay Chief Executive says “The awards are an important opportunity for us to reflect on the achievements of the past year but also thank those who help make Secondary School sport happen. Without our volunteer coaches, Sport Coordinators and whānau and friends transporting ranagathi to their chosen sporting opportunities, Secondary School sport simply wouldn’t happen.”
“This is an important event for Sport Hawke’s Bay, and we are proud to be once again be celebrating success by so many”.
Double Olympian, Aimee Fisher has been announced as guest speaker for the function. The former Karamū High School student and current K1 500m record holder will return to Hawke’s Bay to help celebrate the awards and will speak to students about her rise through the ranks of Canoe Racing and what it takes to compete at the top of your sport.
Fisher claimed the Female Sportsperson of the Year Award in 2012 at an event held at the Napier Municipal Theatre. This year four young athletes who have all competed at a national level are jostling for the award with Sophie Webber (Woodford House), Graecyn Parahi (Napier Girls’ High School), Maddie France (Iona College), and Mayah Dooney (Taradale High School) all worthy finalists.
Since recognised at these awards in 2012, Fisher has gone on to claim Gold in the K2 Youth Olympics in Sydney 2013 and has made the A final in both the Rio 2016 and Paris 2024 Olympics along with World Cup medals in each colour and being announced as Hawke’s Bay Supreme Sportsperson of the Year in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
